Heart & Home by Victoria Duerstock is full of lovely photos of gorgeous homes that truly inspire you to have some fun in home decor! I really had the pleasure in reading this book and was so thankful for the opportunity to do a review on it. Victoria’s writing is welcoming and warm. While I did find a few editing error, the overall book is well written and draws the reader in. It took me three days to finish and probably would’ve only taken me two had my dear one-year-old not been fussy! It would make a great devotional, I believe, by reading only a page per day and meditating on it.
The book as a whole is about your home and how it relates to one’s relationship with God. I found this intriguing and informational. I never had thought of the ways that our homes are good examples of ourselves as Christians! Looking around my home, you can tell I am a mother. There’s laundry on the couch, dog hair in the corners, and sometimes dishes piled in the sink as I chase my one-year-old away from the dog dishes for the millionth time. Clutter in our homes can also mean our hearts are cluttered with stress or other things, as discussed in Heart & Home, but it also shows we are human and imperfect.
One thing that I find important that Duerstock mentions throughout her book, is to be ready for guests at a moments notice. It’s important that we can open our home to visitors that stop by without invitation, because, most times, it’s because God brought them to our door at that specific moment for a specific reason. She also mentions to keep one area continuously clean for this very reason. Having an open concept home, this place would be the majority of my home! (Unless you want to hang out in the motor home!)
Her book has one look not only at the space around them that they call home, but also into their hearts. How does your home reflect your heart and relationship with Christ?
This book will make you want to remodel your home to match some of the wonderful images throughout the book!
